If your teeth are dull and yellow, you may try whitening them for a more attractive smile.

Many people are dissatisfied with their teeth, which may not be displaying the bright smile which we have always wanted. There are many causes for teeth discoloration, including frequent consumption of substances like coffee, tea and red wine. And some people just aren't born with pearly whites.

Whitening will likely be a possibility at the back of your mind if you are like many individuals whose teeth are discolored or simply not the shade of white that you expect from them. Another cause of teeth discoloration is aging. Luckily, getting your teeth whitened can make you look years younger.

If you decide to whiten your teeth, start by visiting with your dentist. The dentist will make a cast of both your lower and your upper teeeth. Your dentist will send this off to a lab.

Once there, a cast will be constructed from the impression which will result in a replica of your teeth. A plastic substance is employed to create trays from this. Your dentist receives the plastic trays back from the lab.

Advice on how to put the trays in and use the kit correctly will come from your dentist. Using syringes, you'll put whitening gel in the parts of the trays that correspond to the teeth you need to whiten. Once you're done with that, place the mold in your mouth before you go to bed.

Continue the process until you obtain the preferred shade of white. In most cases people get instant results, and the entire process only takes about 2 to 3 weeks to reach your goal. Some patients have tetracycline discoloration or fleurosis in the rare situation; these take longer term remedies of as long as two to six months.

Once the whitening is done, it's strongly advised that the patient puts off any restorative work for a minimum of two weeks so that the color of their teeth can stabilize. Many people only require one round of treatment. A lot of research went into the longevity of whitening, and people are very happy their teeth remain white for year after year.

During whitening, some people have reported sensitivity. This is usually tolerable, and stops when the treatments are finished. Sensodyne toothpaste is helpful in treating this aide effect.

You may also choose from the myriad of safe over-the-counter products to whiten your teeth. Their effectiveness, however, is still questionable. Patients may experience a very small erasure of stains and even a little bit of whitening, but these items won't help your teeth change drastically.

It is suggested that you seek out an at-home kit that contains plastic strips or a mold-able mouth tray. These can cost a lot of money but will provide a more custom fit.

Patients who have just whitened their teeth are advised to avoid staining substances for the first two weeks after the treatment. Cigarettes, tea, red wine and coffee are just a few of the items to avoid. Make sure you contact your dentist if you feel any pain, increased sensitivity, or gum inflammation while undergoing treatment.
