7 Simple Steps To Affordable Car Insurance Premiums

One of the most costly aspects of owning a car, outside of the initial purchase cost, is car insurance. Varying massively in its price, it can cost anything from a few hundred pounds to several thousands of pounds, depending on the individual.

If you're struggling to find cheap car insurance, have a look through these 7 points to easily reduce the cost of your premiums.

1. Firstly, there is a general rule that if you have struggled to pay for the actual car itself, you're going to struggle to pay for the car insurance and therefore you should only attempt to insure a car that you can realistically afford - don't go for a model with all of the bells and whistles if you don't really need it.

It can be tempting to head straight down to any of your local Jaguar dealers and purchase the new XF V6, for example, spending all of your money on the car, but without looking at the insurance price first, it's likely that you'll struggle to be able to take out any type of car insurance policy.

2. By restricting when you use your car to off-peak times, you should see a noticeable reduction in the cost of your premium. Obviously this isn't possible for every one, but if you can refrain from using your car to, for example, commute to and from work, your premium price should decrease.

3. The area where you keep your car when it is not in use has a noticeable effect on the price of your premium. If you've got an alarmed garage, make sure that you use it and don't just leave your car on the road because it's easier.

Remember, though, that if you say you keep your car in an alarmed garage at night when at home and it gets stolen because you've left it outside, you'll struggle to get any money from the insurance company - if you say that you keep it in a garage, make sure you do.

4. It is worthwhile investing in some high quality security devices, such as a steering wheel lock or handbrake and gear stick locking mechanism, as these should help to reduce the cost of your insurance.

Car insurance companies look at how sensible you are as a driver and car owner, meaning that if you take good care of your car and do all you can to ensure it isn't stolen, you will be rewarded with a discounted policy cost.

5. The quickest and easiest way to increase the cost of your premium is to receive penalty points on your license due to committing a road offence. With SP30 - exceeding the speed limit on a public road - being the most common offence, make sure that you drive within the speed limits at all times, constantly abiding by the Highway Code.

6. If you have traditionally purchased Fully Comprehensive car insurance, have a look at whether it is this level of cover that you actually need. Whilst it offers the most extensive cover, it is often the most costly and for some people, the amount of cover that Third Party or Third Party, Fire and Theft provides is sufficient for their level of usage.

7. Finally, go through the policy document that the insurer has provided (whether this is an electronic version that is a standard policy document viewable online or a paper version that is sent in the post after you have made payment) and check that any points that they take for granted are firstly true and secondly, relevant to you.

Some car insurance companies assume that you will not exceed 10,000 miles each year. However, if you know that you aren't going to cover half of this, it is worthwhile calling them and explaining, as the price of your premium is likely to fall.
